A Friend for Him: The Human Connection Behind care.coach

A visit ends. The front door closes. There is still a whole afternoon ahead.

For an older adult spending much of the day alone, that time can feel long. For the family members and care teams supporting them, it raises a familiar concern: Who will be there to talk, offer encouragement, or hear what’s on their mind?

Our short video, A Friend for Him, invites us to think about what a little connection can mean in someone’s everyday life.

At the heart of care.coach is a relationship: a familiar presence, a conversation to look forward to, and someone there to listen.

What companionship looks like at home

When people first encounter care.coach, they often notice the friendly animal avatar on a tablet. What makes that experience meaningful is the support behind it.

care.coach combines technology with real human Health Advocates to offer companionship and support through the avatar, available around the clock. Everyday interactions can include conversation, medication and appointment reminders, encouragement to stay active, and help connecting with family through video visits. Explore how care.coach works.

Those capabilities become personal in the context of someone’s day. There is a chance to talk when the house feels quiet. A little encouragement when a routine feels difficult. An opportunity to share something that might otherwise go unsaid.

That is the experience we wanted to bring into focus with this video.

Why the relationship matters to care teams

For Programs of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE) and other organizations supporting older adults at home, care continues between appointments and visits.

Teams need ways to stay connected to participants during those hours. Participants need support they feel comfortable welcoming into their lives.

care.coach brings companionship, reminders, health coaching, and updates for care teams into an ongoing experience at home. For a participant, that can mean a familiar conversation woven into their daily routine. For their care team, it offers another way to support the care plan and understand what is happening between visits.

What “great company” means to a participant

The importance of companionship also comes through in participants’ own words.

In a published West PACE case study, one participant described care.coach simply: “I like it a lot and it is great company.”

The program used avatars to support activities such as music, games, poetry, and communication with care staff when pandemic restrictions disrupted in-person connections. That experience offers a concrete example of how companionship can become part of everyday care. Read the West PACE case study.

A Friend for Him gives us another way to share the human purpose behind that work. Technology makes connection possible across distance. The relationship gives someone a reason to look forward to it.

Think of a participant who could use more company or encouragement between visits.

How might care.coach fit into their day—and the care your team already provides?
